The gut and the bone

A well-balanced intestinal microbiome is an important regulator of bone density in the body. Changes in the composition of bacteria in the gut can increase bone loss in certain diseases (e.g. osteoporosis or rheumatoid arthritis). Conversely, this process can be partially prevented and positively influenced by prebiotic and probiotic supplements. Important factors are short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) which are formed by fermentation in the intestine and have an impact on the immune system and body organs. Mario Zaiss and Georg Schett have described in their latest review the relationship between SCFAs and the musculoskeletal system and their role in the regulation of bone cells.
